Success Story: Erodica and William
Erodica was very nervous about becoming a mother, and her feelings of inadequacy were intensified because of poor English skills and a lack of role models. She and William also didn't have a support system in place, since their families live in another country. They were very excited to learn about Every Child Succeeds, and looked forward to receiving advice, support and information from their home visitor. Now Erodica is feeling more confident. She says her home visitor taught her about child growth and development, home safety, nutrition, immunization and the importance of parenting. What's more, the family's living conditions have improved, thanks to the home visitor explaining their rights as renters.
Families who participate in Every Child Succeeds do so voluntarily and share one important goal: to provide a healthy home that will help their child learn and grow. This commitment to being good parents is a key ingredient to their success and the success of Every Child Succeeds. Every Child Succeeds works with at-risk, first-time moms and their families.
About 85 percent have social adversities that include isolation, mental illness and substance abuse, among others; almost 70 percent have a history of violence, abuse and trauma. All of our mothers strive to be good parents, despite the many obstacles they face. They are achieving outstanding outcomes for themselves and their children. Providing support for women prenatally and during their children's first three years of life is essential in helping them become capable, nurturing mothers and connecting them to additional resources within the community.
